Elite Royal Navy rescue team sent as possible calls detected from missing Argentine submarine

Elite Royal Navy rescue team sent as possible calls detected from missing Argentine submarineThe Royal Navy has deployed its elite submarine rescue team to join the search for a missing Argentine submarine, after failed satellite calls thought to be from the vessel raised hopes the crew were still alive. HMS Protector also began scouring the South Atlantic as part of the international hunt for the missing vessel, and HMS Clyde was being diverted from South Georgia. Argentine officials said naval bases had detected seven incomplete satellite calls over the weekend attributed to the sub and were now trying to use them to pinpoint its location. The communication attempts "indicate that the crew is trying to re-establish contact, so we are working to locate the source of the emissions," the Argentine Navy said on its Twitter account, adding that the calls lasted between four and 36 seconds. An international team of ships and aircraft were braving heavy seas and high winds to search for the German-built ARA San Juan which has been lost since last week. ARA San Juan seen leaving the port of Buenos Aires Credit:  REUTERS The Royal Navy said it was flying the Submarine Parachute Assistance Group (SPAG) to the region to join the hunt. The highly trained team of medics, engineers and escape specialists is continuously on six hours notice to go anywhere in the world. Team members are parachute trained so that they can leap into the water at the scene if needed, but in this case will embark on HMS Protector. They carry inflatable boats and life rafts, medical equipment and communications gear which allows them to talk to trapped crews. Arrived on task in the search area in the early hours of this morning and have commenced sonar and visual search for #ARASanJuan as part of the ongoing multinational operation. Conditions remain challenging given current weather. pic.twitter.com/Sxgi9MZGo5— HMS_Protector (@protector_hms) November 19, 2017 The San Juan and its 44 crew last made contact on Wednesday when she was 267 miles off the coast in the Gulf of San Jorge. The latest possible calls were a sign for “cautious enthusiasm”, naval experts said, showing the crew may be alive, afloat and at a shallow enough depth to attempt to communicate. HMS Protector has begun sonar scans to hunt for the submarine Credit: MOD Claudio Rodriguez, whose brother Hernan is aboard the submarine, told a local television channel: "They've got to be afloat. Thank God. That gives us hope, because we knew that if they were down below, they would be screwed.” HMS Protector, the Royal Navy’s 5,000 ton ice patrol and survey ship, was diverted to join the search from a routine mission in the area and can bring its high definition sonar to bear on the search. Search and rescue mission for Argentinian submarine The hunt also includes help from Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and the United States. America on Sunday said it was sending a second P-8 Poseidon submarine hunting navy patrol plane to join the search. The US Navy has also dispatched two submarine rescue chambers that can dock onto stricken boats and ferry crew to the surface from hundreds of feet underwater. ARA San Juan submarine Credit: Argentine defence ministry/AFP The San Juan is a TR-1700 class submarine which had been returning from a routine mission to Ushuaia, near the southernmost tip of South America, to its base at Mar del Plata, about 250 miles south of Buenos Aires. Among those on board is Argentina's first female submarine officer, 35-year-old weapons officer Eliana Krawczyk. Rescuers are focusing on an ocean patch about 190 miles in diameter located about 270 miles from the coast of the southern province of Chubut.

M7 earthquake triggers tsunami warnings for New Caledonia and Vanuatu

M7 earthquake triggers tsunami warnings for New Caledonia and VanuatuAn undersea earthquake of magnitude 7.0 struck in the South Pacific on Monday, sending small tsunami waves towards New Caledonia and Vanuatu. The quake, initially reported as magnitude 7.3, struck 51 miles east of the Loyalty Islands and was the second major tremor in the same area in less than 24 hours and the third in the past month. Monday's quake struck at 9.43 am local time (2243 Sunday GMT) at a shallow depth of six miles, east of the remote Loyalty Islands, the United States Geological Survey said. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said small tsunami waves were observed in New Caledonia and Vanuatu, but later said the danger had largely passed. Waves may have reached up to one metre (three feet) above the high tide level in parts of New Caledonia and smaller in Vanuatu, the PTWC said. "Minor sea level fluctuations...may continue over the next few hours," a statement from the agency said. "Government agencies responsible for threatened coastal areas should take action to inform and instruct any coastal populations populations at risk," the PTWC said in an alert. Nervous residents reported feeling several tremors throughout the night before the quake hit. "Parked cars were shaking and everyone went outside," one official from Mare in the Loyalty Islands told AFP. "I thought I was going to faint, I was very afraid and I rushed out of my building," said a resident of central Noumea. A Tsunami threat is forecasted to hit the Southern islands and parts of Central islands. Waves of 0.30 meters to 0.5 meters are likely to hit the coastlines of TAFEA, SHEFA and MALAMPA and possibly SANMA provinces. People from these provinces should take precautionary measures.— Dan McGarry (@dailypostdan) November 20, 2017 Wayan Rigault, communications manager at Hotel Nengone Village on the island of Mare, said there was no immediate damage, but guests were on alert for a formal evacuation warning. "We are a little bit scared, we have had an earthquake last night and today it was quite a big one," he said.  Vanuatu's National Disaster Management Office advised people in southern provinces to evacuate coastal areas for higher ground. New Caledonia's civil security agency said it was still compiling data, and was not planning to evacuate immediately. Authorities in Australia and New Zealand said there were no tsunami threats to either of those countries.

Hunter mutilated in bear attack has face rebuilt in pioneering surgery

Hunter mutilated in bear attack has face rebuilt in pioneering surgery A hunter left disfigured from a near-fatal bear attack has had his face rebuilt after undergoing months of surgeries. Lee Brooke’s nose and moustache were “ripped off” his face during the grizzly attack during a hunting trip in Wyoming in October last year. The 60-year-old told FOX 31 he came across an elk he had shot the day before on his excursion, but quickly realised a bear had already claimed the kill. He turned to leave when the bear suddenly attacked, knocking him unconscious. When he woke he found the aggressive animal standing over him. Mr Brooke recalled the shock of seeing his “nose and moustache laid out on the ground”, adding: “Now I knew what was wrong with my face.” He underwent months of surgeries  Credit: FOX31 Denver (KDVR-TV) He explained: “I felt her sniffing my cheek. I felt her whiskers. “I should’ve bled to death right there. I should’ve at least drowned on my blood.” With blood in his eyes blurring his vision, he managed to reach for a steak knife in his pocket, later joking: “I don’t know that I would have been brave enough to stab her if I could see her. “I had to lean in to stab her in the head. So I was [that] close to her nose.” He spent around an hour alone in the woods before help arrived, recalling: “I said ‘Lord I could do with a little help about now!’” His brother-in-law, George Neal, eventually found him and remembered seeing Lee’s torn-off nose and upper lip on the ground. He grabbed the body parts and stuffed them in Lee's pocket before calling 911. He said the bear “ripped his face right off”. A wild bear (not pictured) attacked him in Wyoming Credit: AP Mr Brooke underwent months of reconstructive surgery at the Swedish Medical Center’s Burn and Reconstructive Unit in Colorado. Dr Benson Pulikkottil and Dr Lily Daniali removed a fibula and a flap of skin from his leg, then used the bone and skin to rebuild his face. Doctors will eventually reconstruct his nose, possibly even using a part of his own nose they managed to preserve. “They were so confident and compassionate and communicated really well back and forth,” said Mr Brooke. “Everybody was phenomenal. They built me up and never let me down. They’re the best of the best.” Woman’s yoga session interrupted by bear licking her neck

Putin seeks reflected glory of Russian tsars as he unveils statue in Crimea

Putin seeks reflected glory of Russian tsars as he unveils statue in CrimeaVladimir Putin has unveiled a giant statue of Alexander III in Crimea with a speech drawing parallels between the rule of the conservative tsar and his own 18 years in power.   The decision to commemorate the quiet reign of Alexander III, who was the brother-in-law of Britain's Queen Alexandra, comes after the Kremlin ignored the 100th anniversary of the Russian revolution this month.  An announcer on Saturday praised the “ruler who brought peace, glory, development and stability” as Mr Putin stood at attention and an honour guard pulled back an ochre covering from the looming bronze statue, which depicts the burly, bearded emperor sitting with his hands on a sword.  Officials have frequently stressed the “stability” that Mr Putin's presidency brought after the chaotic 1990s.  Mr Putin discusses a bronze relief of Alexander III's ostensible achievements, some of which did not actually occur during the emperor's reign, Internet users pointed out.  Credit: Alexei Druzhinin/TASS via Getty Images The president is also feted for his aggressive foreign policy, including the annexation of Crimea in 2014, which he alluded to in a speech. Mr Putin said that while Alexander III was often called the “peacemaker” because he waged no large-scale wars while leading the empire from 1881-1894, he “gave Russia 13 years of peace not by yielding but by a fair and unwavering firmness”. He added that the emperor had modernised the military and begun construction of the Trans-Siberian railway.  The monument bears a saying popularly attributed to Alexander III and often quoted by Mr Putin: “Russia has only two allies, her army and fleet”.  A work removes an etching mistakenly showing a Nazi weapon on the monument to Mikhail Kalashnikov unveiled in Moscow in September. Credit: Mladen Antonov/AFP/Getty Images But Internet users were quick to mock a bronze relief of the emperor's alleged achievements. It shows the Tretyakov gallery and the historical museum in Moscow, which were founded years before Alexander III took the throne, as well as novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky, who was already dead. The inaccuracies echoed a mistake in a monument to rifle-maker Mikhail Kalashnikov unveiled in Moscow in September: An etching showed the schematics of the StG 44 rifle used by the Nazis.
